Ms. Minnie Mae Davis Dockins was born into this world on February 13, 1943 to the Late Ulysees Davis and the Late Minnie Lee Hines Davis as the couple’s youngest child.
Minnie was educated in the Randolph County School System and continued her education in beauty school in Cambridge, MD. Minnie had an exciting life spanning over 80 years. She was married to the Late Carroll Dockins, and during her life, she lived in Delaware; Cambridge, Maryland; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; before settling down in Cuthbert. In Philadelphia, Minnie was employed as a private detective and a seamstress. In Edison, she worked as a seamstress and line leader at Ithaca, Riverside, and Carters. In Cuthbert, she worked as a personal care provider with New Horizons Behavioral Health.
In the community, Minnie provided needed services such as being a hair dresser, seamstress, caterer, cake baker, and a landlord. She provided catering services for family gatherings, repasts, and parenting classes. She was an active member of Red Hatters, Starlight Social Club, Friendship Chapter #137 of the Order of Eastern Star, and the Randolph County Senior Citizen Center.
Minnie was reared in the church and served faithfully at Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church until her health failed. Working faithfully, Minnie served as the recording secretary, President of the Usher Board, President of the Kitchen Committee, Deaconess, Missionary, and Van Driver. She also hosted the Cuthbert House Rally and many preachers’ dinners on behalf of Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. Minnie was very proud of signing licenses as the secretary for three ministers ordained at Mt. Vernon—Min. Justin Davis, Min. Veronica Fillingame, and Min. Antonio Shelley.
Minnie was a devoted mother to her only son, Deacon Grayling Davis. The two had a special bond only shared by a mother and a son. Minnie truly loved her family and wanted to attend every family event. She was always present at graduations, recitals, performances, family reunions, family dinners, holiday celebrations, and Starlight Retreats. Being an avid traveler, she was a frequent guest on Carnival Cruises and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
Minnie was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Mary Jane Moore, Eddie Will Terry, Louis Terry, Mitchell Davis, Marcellus Davis, Jesse Davis, Eula Mae Slaughter, Willie James Davis, and Eva Alston; nephews James Slaughter, Charles Slaughter, Joey Montgomery, Min.
