Councilman Lewis Shingles

Councilman Lewis “Mose” Shingles was born to Clara Alford and Johnnie B. Allen on December 23, 1947 in Cuthbert, Georgia. 

Lewis departed this life October 28, 2024, at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany GA. He was preceded in death by six siblings, W.C. Bletcher, Joseph Bletcher, Willie D. Allen, George Allen, Leon Allen and Gussie Johnson. 

He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Piney Grove Baptist Church, Cuthbert, GA. He was a graduate of Henderson High School, Class of 1966. He was married to Betty Parker. This union was blessed with one child, Chauncey Shingles, and two stepchildren, Johnny Thomas Parker and Tammy Parker. 

He enlisted in the United States Army in 1967 and was a radio and communications specialist during the Vietnam war. After 20 years of military service he retired and moved back to Georgia starting ventures running a restaurant, tax preparer and a truck driver. He later took interest in his local community and was elected to the Cuthbert City Council in 2019, and reelected January 2024.

 Lewis had several passions. He loved cooking, many different types of foods, but especially loved grilling and barbecuing. He loved gardening, growing his own fruits and vegetables working in his garden and when he had the opportunity he loved to go fishing. 

He leaves to cherish his memories, one son Chauncey (Danielle) Shingles of Las Vegas, NV; Three grandchildren, Antonio (Shawn) Shingles of San Antonio, TX, Mia Shingles and Jayden Shingles of Las Vegas, NV; Sisters, Hattie B. Mills of Hartford, CT, Johnnie L. Knighton, Pearlie Dennard, Ozzie (C.J.) Armstrong, all of Cuthbert, GA, Gladys Pinkins of Camilla GA, Eunice Hardwick of Cuthbert GA, Loretta (Martin) Embry of Jacksonville, FL; Brothers, Alto (Ester) Allen of Bloomfield CT, Freddie (Linda) Allen of Benevolence, GA, Willie (Melissa) Cladd, Allen (Janice) Alford of Albany, GA, James Alford of LaGrange, GA; Three great grandchildren, Keelan Shingles, Aria Shingles and Amelia Shingles of San Antonio, TX; Aunt, Annie (Isaac) Cannon of Cuthbert, GA; Uncles, Jethro (Solone) Shingles, Johnny (Linda) Shingles of Atlanta, GA, Wilburn (Earlene) Shingles, J.D. Shingles of Columbus, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
