Dukes Alexander SHORTER

Dukes “Poppy” Alexanders Shorter, Jr. was born on November 14, 1959 in Cuthbert, GA. He was the son of the late Dukes Alexander Shorter, Sr. and the late Odessa Johnson Burkes. He departed this life on February 14, 2017 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA.Poppy was educated in the Randolph County Public Schools and was a proud graduate in the Randolph-Clay High School. After high school, he attended a Job Corp Program in El Paso, Texas. Dukes was an entrepreneur in the area of home improvement and his motto was “Don’t ask if I can do it, ask when can I do it.” He was a member of the Virgil Chapel Church.Dukes was a great father, grandfather, and a devoted friend. He was the life of the party! He had a big heart for children; no one was a stranger to him.He leaves to cherish his memories his wife Diane Shorter of Lilburn, GA; his three children: Tara Shorter of Norcross, GA, Jarrod (Dwan) Shorter of Winder, GA, and Damita Thomas of Cuthbert, GA; an adopted son: Deon Pope of Norcross, GA; two step-children: Lyshondra Phillips of Lilburn, GA and Jamad Phillips of Winston-Salem, NC; four sisters: Kimmye Edwards, Peppi and Vonda Webb of Cuthbert, GA, and Pam Figueroa of Easton, PA; one brother: Derrics Shorter of Cuthbert, GA; two adopted brothers: Rashard and Marquese Burkes of Cuthbert, GA; 15 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
