Gussie Bell Ward-Harmon was born to Dave and Iona Ward in Benevolence, Randolph County, Georgia on April, 4, 1944. She was the second of three children. She has one surviving brother, Clinton Ward of Linden, NJ; step-mother, Blanche Jones Ward, and one sister, Elizabeth “Liz” Humphrey. Gussie passed away on May 20, 2013 at her home in Cuthbert, Georgia. Preceding her in death is a brother, Dave “Levy” Ward and a daughter, Mary Harmon. At an early age Gussie joined Benevolence Missionary Baptist Church. She was an extremely hard work woman, who was employed at Day Company (Columbia Forest) for 31 years until the closure of the plant. She loved cooking and entertaining family and friends. Gussie leaves to cherish her memories four children: Lester Harmon, Jr. (Martisha Mackaravitz), Bernard Harmon (Diane Simmons), Stephanie Harmon and Rodrick Thomas (Lisa Thomas); six grandchildren: Courtney Harmon, Brittany Brooks, Trevon Williams, Tyress Harmon, Destiny Harmon and Aniah Thomas, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. Gussie had a special love for animals, especially her dog, “Precious”.
