Smith Learning Complex Sterlin Vandolph Shorter was born March 25, 1933 the seventh of nine children to the parentage of the late Lofieldia Shorter and Jessie Thomas Shorter. He confessed Christ at an early age and joined Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as Sunday School Superintendant, Deacon, Usher, and Choir member until his health failed. He is a graduate of Randolph County Veteran School. He served two years in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Five siblings preceded him in death: Margie, Lofieldia, Jr., Artelious, David, and Louvie Shorter; one son-in-law, Mozell. He leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife of forty years, Elvira Taylor Shorter; children; Veronica T. Majors-Hilber (Abell) and Cynthia A. Smith of Louisville, Kentucky, Serlin V. Smith (Ceretta) of Grover Town, GA., Sandra D. Smith and Tammy Smith of Tampa, Fl., Shane Armstrong of St. Petersburg, Fl., Cecelia Nichole Shorter, Decatur, GA., Tyrone Shorter (Cassandra) of Atlanta, GA., Shaun Shorter (Kimberly) of St. Petersburg, Fl.; three sisters, Forestine Jones, Hilda Anderson (Robert) and Nathan Cornell all of Detroit, MI.; one niece reared as a sister Meverlene Hankerson of Easton, PA.; one brother-in-law, Amos Beekett of Charlotte, N.C.; two sister-in-laws, Essie Sutton (Charlie) and Annie Ruth Shorter all of Cuthbert, GA., grandchildren, great grandchildren, and host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
