Deacon Harrison Porter, III was born August 12, 1955 in Marion County, Georgia to Harrison Porter, Jr. and the late Ida Mae Sales Porter. At an early age, he joined Mount Olive Baptist Church. Later, he joined the Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. Harrison graduated from Marion County High School in 1973. Harrison entered the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1981. He played football for the U.S. Marine Corp. He also served in the United States Army National Guard Reserve for approximately 12 years. Harrison was employed as a correctional officer at the Lee County Correctional Institute; detention officer at Stewart Correctional Institute and at the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA); as a security officer and bus driver for the Randolph County School System; as a personal care provider at New Horizon; and as a license examiner with the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles. He was an active member of the St. Thomas Masonic Lodge #70, the NAACP where he served as the 1st Vice President, and a deacon at the Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church serving as assistant chairman of the deacon board, van driver, and treasurer. He was united in Holy Matrimony on December 15, 1979 to Linda at Virgil Chapel Baptist Church, Cuthbert, GA. On Wednesday, October 27, 2010, the angel of death quietly entered the room of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend and carried him to his reward. As a family, we pause and give thanks to our Heavenly Father for the many wonderful years we shared with our loved one. He leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife, Linda Porter of Cuthbert, GA; two daughters, Rhonda Porter of Leesburg, GA and Ashley (David) Porter Young of Cuthbert, GA; one granddaughter, Christina Tillis of Leesburg, GA; six siblings, Calvin (Thelma) Swann of Newark, NJ, Mae Swann of Brooklyn, NY, Ann (Anthony) Porter Germany of Stone Mountain, GA, Doris (Willie) Porter Caldwell of Decatur, GA, Bobby Porter, Debra Porter Graham both of Buena Vista, GA; two nephews reared as brothers, Dwayne (Jay) Harris of Utopia, GA and Gregory Germany of Atlanta, GA; two sisters-in-law, Naomi (Bobby) Jenkins of Cuthbert, GA and Leslie (Richard) Green of Leesburg, GA; three brothers-in-law, James Slaughter, Donald (Phyllis) Slaughter both of Cuthbert, GA, Charles (Marjorie) Slaughter of Albany, GA; several aunts and uncles, Wilburt Sales, Sr. and Thornton Sales, Jr. both of Brooklyn, NY, Billy Sales of Buena Vista, GA, Eula Mae Collins of Miami, FL, Mary Hanberry of Brooklyn, NY, Polly (Neverlin) Finley of Miami, FL, Peggy (Larry, Sr.) Franklin of Plains, GA, James Porter of Jacksonville, FL, Jimmy (Ella Mae) Porter, Alma (Moses) Ross, Louise Tennyson, Irene (Milton) Minter all of Buena Vista, GA, Ella Pearl Ramsey and Nancy Porter both of Jacksonville, FL; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
